We have been canoeing and kayaking the Yellow River for almost 30 years with friends and family. Over the years we watched the Ion Exchange evolve as we floated by, not knowing what it was all about. We now kayak the river 3 – 4 times a year, sometimes with three generations and twenty-plus kayaks. Staying at the Ion Inn is the ultimate river experience. We put in at Volney or the Sixteen bridge, float down to the Ion, take out and enjoy an evening around the campfire. Howard and Donna have truly built a retreat for the soul in this river valley-paradise. The cabin is surrounded by wild flowers, birds galore, and a horse barn sits nearby. We have slept sixteen people in the cabin and filled the yard with tents.
Heavy rains shot the river levels way up for the Labor Day Weekend. [You can view them at this website: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?05389000.]
Friday, 8/31/07, noon: 7.7 ft.
Sat, noon: 7.3 ft (We did Big Paint Creek instead.)
Sun, noon: 6.9 ft.
Mon, noon: 6.7 ft. This is over 2 ft higher than the norm for that time of year. 4.5 ft is about as low as you could do it in a kayak and still have fun.
We did the Yellow on Sunday and Monday. What a ride!!!
We came back and camped down at the “Playground” October 5th – 7th and water levels were still wonderfully high, 5.7 ft. Beautiful warm weather.
If you like to float, don’t miss this part of the river. It is the fastest falling river in Iowa. And the best part is from the Ion bridge down to the public take-out, so be sure to do that stretch sometime!
I tried to attach some photos, but can't get them to upload. Will try again later.
